(Gifted) Northern Stage: The Wolf review

Christmas is falling into place, lots of people are getting their Christmas trees up, starting their Christmas shopping and some already complete and wrapped.

At Christmas as a family, we attend a pantomime every year. Today, me and Roxy went to our first very own Christmas pantomime at Northern Stage which is a registered charity and theatre based on the University of Newcastle campus, Northern Stage can be accessed from either Claremont Road (opposite the Great North Museum: Hancock) or from the ramp off Barras Bridge (opposite Newcastle Civic Centre), this means it’s very accessible as even people who don’t drive will be able to access public transport very nearby with being so close to town.

This got us in our Christmas spirit when we sat down to watch the wolf production from kitchen zoo putting a festive spin on Aesop’s classic fable The Boy Who Cried Wolf. Beneath the Christmassy moon, under the snowy mountains, amongst a flock of woolly sheep, Jack is bored. Bored of watching sheep, bored of counting sheep but most importantly bored of SHEEP!

Down in the village just a whisper of a wolf will cause a panic…Join them for a wintery adventure and find out what happens when Jack cries WOLF! With original music from folk musician Katie Doherty, puppetry and a tale you thought you knew.

The production is for under 5’s, there is fur throws on the floor around near the stage so your child can be so close to the show, the characters and puppetry are so interactive with the little ones, making them get up and dance with them, getting them to do Chinese whispers “there’s a wolf”, The story line really gets the children up on their feet and get them involved.

The show was very relaxed and comfortable, maybe to comfortable to Roxy when she took her shoes and coat off and made herself at home. There was a little coat rack on the side where you could put your coat to one side. And also seating further at the back of the stage for the parents or children who don’t want to sit to sit so close.

At the end of the show, the children got to meet the puppets and characters, Great for photo opportunities and also they get a sticker and colouring sheet.

This is show will be on til the 4th January, tickets are £10 for adults and £8 for children. They also have BLS signed sessions on the 14th and 21st December which I though was a great aspect to the show. They are also wheelchair and buggy friendly too with lifts to help make the building accessible and there are five wheelchair positions in Stage 1, two positions in Stage 2 and all seats are removeable in Stage 3.
